Hibari (CV: Yusa Kouji) specializes in psychoanalyzing as a profiler in the SideKicks team. He’s very observant and can read others fairly easily. He’s also a bit of a ladies man ((hence him being voiced by Yusa Kouji lol))
Hibari talks with Inori about feeling lonely even though he’s around so many people. Inori says she’s not lonely as long as he’s with her. She realizes what she said sounded odd so tells him there wasn’t a weird meaning to it.
Inori was delivering evidence from a case to a client. On her way there, Shisui calls out to her. He’s skipping the studio to chill out around town and greets her in his usual mysterious way. He asks her to call him in her dreams tonight before leaving lol. After that, Inori spots a girl about to get ice cream across the street. She remembered in her dream the girl dropped her ice cream and tried to warn her, but she ended up dropping it anyway lol. She then remembers she met her before and showed her where the library was when she was lost. The girl introduces herself as Shion. She invites Inori to eat ice cream together but gets a phone call and has to leave. And so they exchange contacts before leaving.
Inori goes back to the SideKicks office, Chika and Hibari are betting 10 dollars that Hibari can’t find Chika’s hidden phone. Hibari uses his perceptive skills to completely see through Chika and manages to figure out the phone was in Shishiba’s pocket. Inori then mentions how she went to by an ice-cream place called “Teddy’s” which is a pretty popular ice cream and met a girl there. Shishiba had been there twice already but Hibari isn’t all that into sweets and has to watch his figure lmao. Chika comments on how he sounds feminine saying that and Hibari tells him he’s getting fat lol.
The next day, Inori meets Shion on her lunch break at Teddy’s Ice cream place. They both order ice-cream and Inori suddenly notices Hibari sitting at a table by himself and calls out to him. Shion also recognizes him back when he was a psychiatrist. She claims he ‘helped’ her back then but Inori doesn’t pry since it’s probably personal. He tells her he’s doing a similar job as a part of SPD as a psychoanalysis. She tells him she just recently moved to Sakurada by herself and is going to start high school soon. She asks to speak with him again sometime. Hibari tells her he’s glad she’s doing well and leaves ahead of them.
After that, Inori and Shion leave the shop. She asks Inori if Hibari is her boyfriend since they seem close. She tells them she’s not but Shion is very enthusiastic about the two of them being a couple. She goes on to mention when she said Hibari helped her, it was in regards to when she first moved to Sakurada. Her parents divorced and she lived with her mom and stepfather but her actual father killed them. Her father is in prison and she moved to live in with her aunt. Inori is shocked, but Shion tells her she’s fine now and Hibari had talked her through it all.
Inori and Hibari were putting away files and Shion was brought up. Hibari wondered if she was curious about their relationship ((even joking how a 15 year old isn’t legal lmao)) he then says that Shion is actually his kid. He then bursts into laughter saying its a joke since there’s no way that’s possible with him being 27 and her being 15 and teases her for believing him. She then mentions what Shion told her and she feels anxious seeing her so happy after something like that. Hibari says it may be a good thing she moved back and it takes time to recover so hopefully she’ll do better with Inori there.
After that, Inori overhears Hibari making a phone call about Shion. Hibari notices she heard and is obviously curious, so he takes her up to the rooftop to talk. Inori has been worried about Hibari since he’s seemed more anxious ever since he saw Shion again. He tells her he called her aunt and planned to meet them. He wants Inori to go with him as well since he thinks it’d be more reassuring for her to have a friend with her. In addition, he actually counselled her before her parents were killed and both her mom and stepdad were abusive parents. He tells her many children are unconsciously protective of parents when asked if they’re abusing them. This is why Shion was always in denial and said everything was fine. Around a year and a half ago, Shion was found in her home under a pool of blood. Her dad had killed her parents right in front of her and Hibari continued to counselor her after that. He felt like he could’ve pulled her out of the situation sooner, so feels guilty about it. She’d been doing fine ever since she moved in with her aunt, but Hibari is anxious she’s been blaming herself for it. But he’s glad to see she’s doing well and knows that Inori being there with her will help her.
That night, Inori and Hibari meet Shion and her aunt at Kirara’s diner. Her aunt is anxious about Shion moving out to attend a Sakurada boarding school with her living such a distance away and having a PTSD. Hibari says it may take time for her to adjust, but is willing to counselor her anytime when she may need it. This reassures her aunt but Shion says she’d prefer to stay in the home she used to live in because she believes her parents are still there ((spiritually?? I guess)). Both Hiragi and her tell her they understand its a plaxe with important memories but she can’t go there now. Her aunt then goes to mention how she doesn’t believe that her biological father, Hiragi, was the one who murdered her parents. She believes if it was legit self defense, Hiragi’s sentence could be shorted and Shion could finally live with her father again.
Inori decides to take Shion out of the conversation and go to the bathroom since she can tell it makes Shion anxious. Shion tells her that she actually doesn’t want the case to be reexamined because her father himself admitted himself to be guilty and believes it to be true. She feels strongly about this and says she wouldn’t live with him anyway because she hates her father. Inori tells her its okay to be upset or not hide her feelings. And she mentions Hibari saying something similar. Nevertheless, she knows Hibari said she shouldn’t return to that house, but wants to someday. She’s afraid, but has Inori as her friend.
Hibari walks Inori home and thanks her for looking out for Shion. When he makes it to her place he talks about people using non-verbal communication to express how they’re feeling, like how Shion was clearly uncomfortable but didn’t say anything and yet she knew. Hibari then shows her another way of non-verbal communication and whispers softly in Inori’s ear. He asks if she knows how she feels about him and she says she doesn’t. He then says he likes her and kisses her. After that, he wishes her a goodnight.
The next morning, Hibari greets Inori like usual. He decides to visit Shion’s father in prison and has Inori come with him. When she brings up the fact that he kissed her, she asks why. He tells her bluntly that its because he likes her. When they arrive, they talk to Shion’s father through the glass. Hibari tells him that Shion has moved back to Sakurada. Hiragi is shocked that she’d want to come back after what happened. Which is why Hibari is worried because Shion continuously says she wants to return to the home she used to live in. Hibari doesn’t care what the circumstances are, but he wants to help Shion even if that means reinvestigating the case. Hiragi tells him that as a parent, he’d do anything for his child, so he wouldn’t understand. He doesn’t care if she never lives with him, he only did what he felt was saving her. But before he leaves, Hibari points out he may not have experience as a parent, but he had the same experience as a child.
Hibari drives Inori back home and on their way, Hibari stops the car noticing Inori’s silence. After speaking with him, she believes that Shion’s father did what he did for the sake of Shion. Hibari believes that her being frjends with Shion will help her and not as a person to counselor her. Hibari mentions how she’s also been avoiding eye contact with him probably because she’s been able to face her feelings. But he tells her that he kissed her because he likes her and kisses her again passionately until they start french kissing lmao. After dropping her off home, Inori tells Hibari she’s glad he kissed her and said he likes her. She asks if he still feels lonely while being with her and he apologizes before wishing her a goodnight.
A couple days later, Hibari and Inori are driving together. Hibari can tell Inori seems put of it, and mentions going to Shion’s old home since its nearby. When they arrive, they notice the light is on and someone is in there. They go inside and find both Shion and her aunt there. Apparently they just wanted to see the condition of the place and her aunt assures Hibari they aren’t staying there. Hibari talks to her aunt privately about how he feels its a bit too early for her to be visiting the house, but Shion seems overly joyed to be there and reminiscence on the good memories.
After that, Hibari meets Inori at a cafe to talk about Shion. He think there’s still an instability with her and Inori notices it too. He thinks she should see another counselor aside from him since he doesn’t believe a liar like him could help him. He also believes he’s partially to blame for what happened since he felt he could’ve gotten her out of the situation sooner. But Inori tells him that she believes he’s the only one who could help Shion since she believes he’s the one who saved her.
That night, Inori sees a dream where its dark in a park and Shion tells her aunt to “stop already” and has blood on her face. Inori immediately wakes up and calls Hibari. He tells her to calm down and they head towards the park where they spot Shion and her aunt. Although they seem fine and her aunt starts to get defensive about how it seems like they’re stalking her and Shion. She wonders why they’re fighting, and Inori tells her its because she thought she was involved in an incident. This confuses her, so she explains she gets these predictive dreams, hence why she thought something was going on. Before they leave, Hibari invites Shion out tomorrow.
The next morning, Hibari is oddly late coming to work. When he arrives, he smells like alcohol and has a hangover. When the others leave pissed off at his attitude, Inori tries to talk to him. He tells her his head hurts and he doesn’t want to talk so he tells her to be quiet for a while. Inori doesn’t understand his careless attitude towards the situation and even when she asks about talking to Shion, he says it wasn’t that important. When she tries to press further, he asks if she thinks he’ll talk just because they’re kissing buddies ((oh that’s harsh)). He starts being more cold and when she says she thought he opened up his heart to her, he said he didn’t. He tells her he can easily understand what she’s thinking and she doesn’t understand a thing about him. He tells her because she likes him, she’s sad and confused. He then teases about saying he liked her and says yes, he said he does. And asks if she wants to continue what they did before since there’s no one there. Just as he approaches her, she leaves upset.
That night, Hibari had called her numerous times. Finally, she picks up the phone and he tells her he needs to see her and speak with her. He apologizes for what he said and she finally lets him in. She asks what happened with Shion, but he says he’ll promise he’ll tell her about it later. First of all, he apologizes how he acted and he didn’t like when he said he liked her. Rather, he’s not good at opening his heart to people and was afraid of opening his heart to Inori. In doing so, she’d see all the sides of him. He says thats all he wanted to say, but before he can leave, Inori stops him and kissed him. She tells him she loves him as he asks her to repeat it over and over lol. He then decides to stay the night so he can stay with her but promised not to do anything… yet.
The next moring, Hibari leaves ahead of time and Inori goes to the office. Inori gets a call from Shion who says she wants to see her immediately. It seems urgent so she meets her at her house right away and texts Hibari she went there. When she gets there, she notices her aunt isn’t there. When she asks about her, Shion says she doesn’t know where she is and she’d be a nuisance anyway. She notices Hibari replied and when she looks at her phone, Shion says Inori is the same, only pretending to care. Suddenly, she turns full yandere mode and shows a knife in her hand. She accuses Inori of knowing she was going to kill her aunt the day she was at the park. She tells her how her stepfather would constantly beat her as her mom watched. So when he beat her mom, she was relieved. Her mom was beat to death by her stepfather, which is why she called her real dad but said he was the worse for leaving her alone. Inori tries to calm her down, but she tells her Inori is in the way too.
Soon, Hibari arrives and tells Shion to put down the knife. He puts down his own gun and tries to calm her down. She tells him he was the one who said it would be fine but it never was. He knows she was trying to kill her aunt both times they saw her but interrupted. She goes completely berserk and tells him to shut up. She yells no one understands her and grabs the gun off the table. Hibari tries to tell her to stop since she’s not capable of killing and she pretty much loses it and shoots Hibari. Eventually, everyone else appears along with Shion’s father. Shion’s father tried to pin all the blame for her actions on himself, which is how he ended up in prison in the first place. Shion was the one who killed her stepfather who murdered her mom. Hibari then reveals he’s not dead and it was just an act! The gun was fake along with the blood.
After that, they find out Shion’s father will have a trial soon so its possible he’ll get out of prison sooner. Shion promises not to bottle up her feelings anymore and will live a more honest life. Thay night, Inori invites Hibari over for dinner. He brings some non-alcoholic champagne and immediately hops on top of her on the bed. In what she thought was going to be some matress mumbo, she quickly closes her eyes to prepare herself. He then laughs and hugs her instead. He tells her that its thanks to her he was able to open his heart and he’s not lonely anymore with her and kisses her.
In the epilogue, Hibari gets embarrassed about wanting to hold hands with Inori and she points out he’s being cute. So they take a picture together while Hibari holds her hand and kisses her. 👀
Thoughts: I always come into these ‘flirty’ tropes wondering what will make them differ from every other flirty type. I’ll admit, I actually liked Hibari more than I thought I would. Like, I’m sure this guy is passionate af ((being voiced by Yusa Kouji helps)) but he actually wasn’t as flirty as I thought he would be. I got Ikki vibes from him when I saw him talking to a random girl in the common route but he actually didn’t womanize that much. Kinda surprising. He reminded me a lot of Yuuta from Kenka Bancho Otome ((also appearance wise)). Like Chika, his route was kinda disconnected from the plot but didn’t really ruin his route for me. His sexy times were pretty nice though not gonna lie…
