Game Overview

In STARCULT: Night Twisted Age, players step into the role of Silviya Nebula, a noblewoman whose husband is murdered on their wedding night. As she searches for answers, she becomes entangled in a web of conspiracies, manipulation, romance, and supernatural forces lurking beneath the surface of her world.

At the heart of the experience is the Emotion Palette, a gameplay system that allows players to choose emotions before selecting dialogue. Different emotional states unlock different responses, revealing new information, changing relationships, and influencing how characters react.

Unlike traditional visual novels that offer only a handful of dialogue options, STARCULT's system can unlock up to 15 dialogue choices within a single conversation, giving players greater control over how Silviya develops throughout the story. Every emotion picked nudges Silviya's personality and her standing with the people around her, so the same conversation rarely plays out the same way twice.

Characters

SILVIYA is our protagonist of the story. As far as first impressions go, I am already drawn to her as she has a strong elegance to her (she is a noblewoman afterall) and you get a sense that she’s not one to sit idly as events occur around her. There’s a lot of different dialogue choices with her due to the “emotion palette” system that I’ll delve into more further in this review. However, I can see her flaws getting in the way of her judgements — so that would be more interesting to see as you progress further in the game.

BALTAZAR is a mysterious prisoner who claims to know the MC but she does not remember him! She encounters him in a dream — or rather a void — where he basically gives some vague information about himself and her. Unfortunately, Silviya does not remember much but you can use the emotion palette to find out tidbits of information! A very hush-hush / secretive character… definitely curious what his backstory is.

CASSIOPEIA is the MC’s best friend and a potential route! We didn’t see much of her so there isn’t too much I can say about her. However, it seems she and the MC have a bit of a playful banter relationship where they can easily tease each other. I’m interested to see just how far their dynamic goes.

GILBERT is the hot butler of the Nebula estate. Just like the description of him states, I get the feeling he’s very prim and proper as well as knowledgeable. He obviously has a softspot for dogs since he literally gave the heroine one so she wouldn’t be lonely lol. I’m all for the noblewoman / butler dynamic so I’d probably be most interested in his route to be honest LOL.

MATTHEW is the detective investigating the murder of the MC’s husband. He’s obviously very perceptive and asks a lot of questions (being a detective and all) so I imagine he’s probably the most normal one in this crew (or maybe I could be completely wrong LOL) but I get the feeling there’s more to him than meets the eye. A lot of these characters are hiding secrets!!!

WILLOW is the quiet but attentive chambermaid. I am really drawn to this character for some reason — and I don’t even know much about her! But I just get a very good vibe from her. She’s obviously super attentive to the MC and seems like she has a wall built up. I do wonder if we can break that wall? That’d be interesting.

There are some more characters but these are the ones that I had my first impression of. Overall, its an interesting batch of characters that I’m excited to learn more about!

System / Features

  • Use the Emotion Palette to unlock up to 15 different dialogue options within a single conversation
  • Uncover multiple story routes and demo endings shaped by your choices
  • Investigate a murder mystery filled with secrets, manipulation and supernatural forces
  • Can you discover who the murderer is? This is just the beginning of the story 🙂
  • Shape Silviya’s personality and influence how others perceive her.

So this game is very unique with it’s dialogue system and to be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever played a game that has a mechanic like this. Basically, you choose an emotion palette and apply it to a dialogue choice. In turn, this can change your dialogue, leading to different scenarios playing out depending on which emotion you chose. I find it a very unique, interesting system and I really liked choosing different ones to see what was said.

This can also adjust / change affection points; so it’s a system that could definitely change the fate of your heroine! Aside from that, every other part of the game is like a traditional visual novel like having a glossary and even a selection to look at the characters and your relationships with them.

Also, thanks for semi-traumatizing me with whatever the hell this was!!! ( no srsly what was this!!?? ? )

Overall Thoughts

This demo wasn’t very long, but there’s definitely a lot of replay value due to the palette choice system. I went through different choices / scenarios about several times and it did give me quite a few different dialogues.

I think there’s a lot of potential with these characters and even though most of them so far are shrouded in mystery, it definitely keeps you wondering what exactly is going on! I really do like a visual novel with a mystery aspect to it. I like the addition of the psychological horror element to this game and I don’t really see that a lot with otome games.

Anyway, you can play the game’s demo here on steam if you wish!
