The story takes place after the Heiji Rebellion, where the heroine Shanao (or Yoshitsune) is the last remaining heir to the Genji name. She is disguised as a boy and keeps it a secret from both the Genji and Heikei clans. She feels burdened by her task to fight Heike as a member of Genji even though she just wants to live peacefully (For consistency purposes I’ll call the heroine “Shanao” but over the course of routes she’s renamed “Yoshitsune”).

Ceres is a woman who brings a “curse” of death wherever she goes. It’s for this reason people call her a Shinigami or a “reaper”. She stays at an orphanage with a nun who decided to take her in even after all the incidents that occurred in the past. In a place called “Arpecheur” everyone is destined to die at 23 years old. Usually by 20 or 21 a person will start to feel the effects of a sort of respiratory disease that’ll kill them at 23. So in order to prolong people’s lives, research has been done to create clones known as “relivers” with people’s memories downloaded and implanted into them. Once a person has died, their memories are downloaded, a reliver is created, and they’re implanted into the new one. This way, people can live for another 23 years before doing the same process all over again.

The heroine, Kisa Tachibana (CV: Terasaki Yuka; she’s a voiced heroine!!) grew up doing plays along with her brother and childhood friend, Yonaga Soushiro. The heroine’s brother attended a famous boys-only drama school called Univers. Kisa always wanted to attend along with her brother but since it’s all boys school she couldn’t and gave up her dream. Her childhood friend Yonaga Soushiro (CV: Satou Gen) also moved away after he started junior high school so she had been alone ever since. But one day she meets the principal of Univers who’s bored of the traditions of the school and wants to see how it’ll play out inviting an actual girl to the mix. So he invites her to attend so as long as she passes the entrance exam like everyone else and hides the fact she’s a girl. She also needs to land a lead role in one of the Univers performances.

This is different from what I normally post but I’ve always wanted to do a sort of ‘Top 10 Otome Games’ I’ve played, but never got a around to it (plus I wasn’t sure what my top 10 even was). But after much thought about it, I finally came up with my own top 10. Obviously, this is my own top 10, and rightfully so its my own opinion and you don’t have to agree with it! My criteria is mostly based on how much I enjoyed it, not necessarily how good it is plot-wise (but a good plot is certainly a factor with enjoyment). This list will probably change over time too. I’ve played quite a few otome games and there are still games I’d like to play but haven’t had a chance or Otomate just hasn’t ported it to a current gen console yet. Also, these are based on the Japanese version of the games, but some of them are available in English. and I’ll make sure to say which ones are and aren’t!
